Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens
Descending in a palm-accented sweep from the Kona Outdoor Circle Educational Center lie the verdant Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens. Designed by landscape architect, Scott Seymour and named in honor of his mother, Sadie Seymour, the founding president of the Kona Outdoor Circle, the gardens are arranged in easily accessed terraces. Each terrace exhibits trees and plants native to a particular part of the world which are commonly grown in Hawaii.
With the help of a self-guiding brochure and pictorial markers throughout, the 1.5-acre site may be enjoyed in just minutes or hours, depending upon one's time and focus. A popular guided lunch-hour tour is offered once a month. Docent tours may also be arranged for groups of 10 or more. The suggested tour begins on the parking level with plantings that would have been found on the island of Hawaii before contact by the Polynesians. From there the terraces display the plants of the Pacific Islands, Austral, Indo-Malayan, Indo-Asian, Asian, Mediterranean, African, West Indian, South American and Central American. Touring the garden one will receive an excellent overview of many of the beautiful trees and plants that are cultivated in Hawaii.
The Kona Outdoor Circle has established these botanical gardens for the pleasure and education of residents and visitors to our island home. Donations to help keep up the gardens are tax deductible and are always welcome.
